Jason Chaffetz says it's not looking good for Michael Flynn
On Tuesday, the House Oversight Committee chairman and ranking member held a press conference in which they said that it is not looking good for former National Security Adviser (NSA) Michael Flynn.
Standing shoulder-to-shoulder, Committee Chair Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) and Ranking Member Elijah Cummings (D-MD) said the evidence that Michael Flynn violated the law as a foreign agent while also serving in the military is not in his favor.
Chaffetz told the media, “As a former military officer, you simply cannot take money from Russia, Turkey, or anybody else. And it appears as if he did take that money. It was inappropriate and there are repercussions for the violation of law.”
Flynn is being accused of illegally taking $45,000.00 in speaking fees from the Russian run media group, RT, as well as speaking with Russian officials about official U.S. governmental business.
The House Oversight Committee requested documents pertaining to the committee’s investigation into Flynn, but the White House denied the committee’s request.
White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer reasoned that the White House isn’t able to provide documents pertaining to the investigation into Flynn because the documents that have been requested would have been held by the Obama Administration.
Cummings told the press that the only way the committee will get its questions answered is if the committee speaks with Flynn: “I believe the Oversight Committee should be holding a hearing with General Flynn…But we need to have the opportunity to ask General Flynn, directly, why he concealed these foreign payments from the Defense Department.”
Flynn denies any wrongdoing. During her show, CNN’s Brooke Baldwin posted a statement Flynn’s lawyer, Robert Keiner, issued.
Keiner’s statement reads as follows, “As has previously been reported, General Flynn briefed the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA, a component agency of DOD (Department of Defense), extensively regarding the RT speaking event trip both before and after the trip, and he answered any questions that were posed by DIA concerning the trip during those briefings.”
Prior to the House Oversight Committee’s revelation, the Senate Intelligence Committee denied Flynn’s request for a plea deal in exchange for information he has about Donald Trump and his campaign’s relationship with Russia’s hacking of the Democratic National Committee and Democratic Presidential Nominee Hillary Clinton.
Flynn has the shortest stint in history as the National Security Adviser. He served 24-days in the role before he was fired for not disclosing his work as a foreign agent and for his lack of honesty about his discussions with Russian officials.
